What the Mac OS is to its "Sherlock", Atari systems is to its "Find It!". The elegant and powerful Finder program is now available in version 2.03 (184 KBytes). Many new features have been added, such as the ability to search within files like web pages and RTF documents. At present, the program is only available in French, but an English translation is already in the works. Find it! is distributed as shareware (DM 40.--, € 20.--). The program should run on any TOS computer that has at least 2 MBytes of RAM. A multitasking operating system such as MagiC or MiNT is recommended. (tr)

Fading Twilight III (17.10.2001 - 05:10 Uhr)

The third CD in the "Fading Twilight" series has been completed. The series releases tunes from the Atari demo scene. The third CD contains no less than 1300 tunes by various Atari musicians. (tr)

PDF viewer for the Atari (17.10.2001 - 01:10 Uhr)

The long announced PDF viewer for Atari systems is finally ready. As expected, it is distributed by invers Software via the new DSD.net. Porthos saves the complex installation and configuration of programs like gemgs or GhostScript - the PDF file just has to be loaded to be displayed. The program requires a multitasking operating system. It was written for MagiC, but should also work under MiNT systems. Also required are:

  • NVDI from version 5.0
  • WDIALOG (available from MagiC 3.0)
  • Papillon (optional for exporting pictures

Porthos is distributed at a price of DM 69.-- (€35.28). A demo version is available, but this always represents only the first page of a document. The manual is also available in PDF format.

Midi-Maze is back! (16.10.2001 - 12:10 Uhr)

MIDI-Maze was one of the first real network games for the Atari ST and had a large following. If you want to revive the old times, you should visit the Midi-Maze homepage. Here you will find all the necessary programs and utilities, as well as information and dates for Maze rounds. A visit is a must for every Maze fan!

Draconis is shareware (16.10.2001 - 10:10 Uhr)

The Internet package Draconis is now distributed as shareware. The programs Adamas 1.74, Marathon 2.0 and FTP/telnet are thus available individually. The distribution will be taken over by the company ag Computertechnik, Axel Gehringer, which is renowned in the Atari market. The Draconis web pages will soon come to life on the ag Computertechnik homepage. All users who have recently inquired with the developer Jens Heitmann will be personally notified shortly. The prices are staggered as follows:

  • Adamas 1.74: € 20.--
  • Marathon 2.0: € 20.--
  • FTP and telnet: € 10.--
  • Complete: € 45.--

VCS news: New Mario Bros. (16.10.2001 - 08:10 Uhr)

The classic Mario Bros. is released in a new version for the classic Atari VCS 2600 game console. The gameplay remains unchanged, but the graphics have been greatly improved. The game is available for free download.

A new game called "Mental Kombat" was also announced. The puzzle game was originally developed for the Commodore 64 and will be ported to the VCS 2600. (tr)

Sondigit 4.08 (16.10.2001 - 08:10 Uhr)

Sondigit is a sound digitizer that works on ST, STE, TT and Falcon. But it also supports clones like the Hades and the Milan and even MagiCMac (special sound driver included). On the Falcon, the DSP is used. Sondigit supports various sound formats:

  • SPL
  • AVR
  • WAV
  • AIF
  • DVS

The documentation is in French, but the program is also available in English. Sondigit is freeware. Screenshots can be found on the developer's website. (tr)

The upcoming issue of st-computer will contain a very special treat for Atari fans. Thomas Raukamp had the rare opportunity to have a conversation with a member of the Tramiel clan who ran Atari in the 80s and 90s and was responsible for products like the ST, the Falcon and the Jaguar. MusicEdit 6.601 (15.10.2001 - 06:10 Uhr)

The notation program MusicEdit is available in version 6.601. The current version has been extensively tested on the 060 upgrade under N.AES on the Milan. In addition, the note heads have been optimised, which now result in a 44% faster note graphic on the Milan 040, for example. In addition, internal optimisations have been made. (tr)

Highwire making progress (15.10.2001 - 01:10 Uhr)

The Atari web browser Highwire, announced months ago in st-computer, is indeed making progress. The program was declared open source by its author some time ago. Since then, Dan Ackerman and Mia Jaap have been working on the browser. Dan does the main work, Mia takes care of patches and the user interface. The new developer version can already display tables, among other things. So we need more patience than planned, but we can still be curious. (tr)

The Pro Atari Computer Club e.V. (PAC) has put the 01-2001 issue of its club magazine online in PDF format. The current issue contains a variety of interesting articles that are sure to interest every Atari user. Topics such as scanning with the Atari Falcon are covered and a report on switching to the Apple Macintosh is provided. The download of the PDF single documents is of course free of charge. (tr)

Bridge 5.03 (14.10.2001 - 11:10 Uhr)

Bridge 5 is the universal export module for the professional DTP program Calamus SL2000. An update to version 5.03 will soon be sent by e-mail to all registered users. Also with the new version checker (we reported) the current module can be requested under Windows. The updater primarily contains optimisations and bug fixes. For example, the packing rate of PDF documents has been significantly increased. The update is free of charge for registered users of Bridge 5.x. (tr)

All about the XL and XE computers from Atari there is a new German-language homepage. The "XL-Project" is to be developed into a central contact point for fans of the "small" Atari. The volumes of the Atari print magazine "Atari Inside", one of the forerunners of today's st-computer from Falke Verlag, have now been completely archived in the stcarchiv and are available in full text. This includes the issues from 1994 to 1996, making Atari Inside the second Atari magazine besides "Antic Magazine" that can be read completely on the web. (tr)

ALICE released as freeware (12.10.2001 - 09:10 Uhr)

ALICE - The Personal Pascal was the first interpreted Pascal environment for the Atari ST. The development package contains its own editor, many help functions and is highly compatible with Borland's Turbo Pascal. The environment is fully integrated into GEM.

ALICE has now been declared freeware and is available for download from developer Brad Templeton's website in versions for TOS and MS-DOS. Documentation is available in HTML format. A detailed (English-language) test report can be found on the web pages of Antic magazine. (tr)

Text2Bas is a tool for converting ASCII files into VZ/CAS format. It can be used with any VZ200/300 and Colour Genie or emulator. The program is - in contrast to the original version - not a command line tool and uses the standard GEM file selection.

Virtual Super System 0.80 (11.10.2001 - 08:10 Uhr)

Virtual Super System is an emulation of the classic Atari VCS 5200 game console on DOS computers. The development of the new version took no less than 3 years, and about 90% of all available 5200 binaries are said to run on it. The Virtual Super System is available for free download. (tr)
